Twitter Removes Ronaldo's Blue Badge Over Subscription Plans

Cristiano Ronaldo Loses Twitter Badge

Cristiano Ronaldo, the renowned Portuguese footballer and Twitter's most followed athlete with 108.3 million followers has lost his blue tick verification badge on the social media platform.

This comes as Twitter enforced new rules that resulted in thousands of accounts losing their verified status, regardless of their level of fame.

The blue tick, previously used as a symbol of authenticity for official accounts, can now be obtained through a monthly subscription of $8 (£6.46) as part of Twitter Blue, a premium service that offers additional features such as longer video uploads and an edit button.

However, many users have expressed dissatisfaction with Twitter's monetization tactics, particularly due to the platform's recent acquisition by billionaire Elon Musk for $44 billion (£38.1 billion) in October 2022.

Musk has stated that he is personally paying for the blue tick subscription of basketball star LeBron James, author Stephen King, and actor William Shatner. James had previously announced that he did not intend to pay for the subscription, leading to Musk clarifying the situation to confuse users.

Despite Ronaldo's immense popularity and lucrative earnings from his football career in clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and currently Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, he has lost his blue tick on Twitter.

Verified badges, also known as 'legacy checkmarks', were introduced on Twitter in 2009 to confirm accounts of public interest and have been used since Musk's ownership of the platform. The removal of blue ticks has raised concerns about increased impersonation attempts and misinformation on the platform.

Notable personalities, including BBC football host Gary Lineker and Manchester City players Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez, have also lost their blue tick verification due to their unwillingness to pay for the subscription. Meanwhile, US Olympian Lolo Jones revealed that while she is no longer verified on Twitter, she still holds verified status on her dating profile.

The changes to Twitter's verification rules have sparked a debate about the accessibility and fairness of verified badges on social media platforms.
