Two Dead, Over 50 Trapped As Commercial Complex Collapse In

Site of the collapse

A two-storey Commercial complex under construction in the Gwarinpa District of the FCT,  collapsed Thursday afternoon, killing two and trapping over 50 people.

Confirming the incident, the Director of Development Control, Federal Capital Territory Administration ( FCTA), Muktar Galadima said that the rescue operation was ongoing with a combined team of several agencies and that about 7 persons have been rescued and taken to the hospital.

He said that while no casualty had been confirmed,  several workers were still trapped on the rumbles of the ill-fated building.

The Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council ( AMMC) Umar Shuaibu said that while the council won't appropriately blame anybody,  an investigation will commence immediately to ascertain both the remote and immediate cause of the collapse.

According to an eyewitness, John Edwin said the workers on the site, especially labourers conveying blocks to the top, were over 40.

He claimed to have lived in the area for many years, and that he has always known the place to be a reserved green area.

Edwin urged relevant authorities to call the management of the Federal Housing Authority to question,  for illegally allocating Green areas to a commercial complex.
