In a sky sports interview featuring the Derby County manager Rooney, the former United player called for Ronaldo to leave the club this summer alongside midfielder Paul Pogba, claiming his return has not benefited the club that the veteran superstar should be replaced by 'younger, hungry players.
Rooney said, 'You'd have to say no' when asked about Ronaldo's benefit since returning to Old Trafford.
'He’s scored, he’s scored important goals in the Champions League games early on in the season. He scored the hat-trick against Tottenham.
'But I think if you’re looking to the future of the club, you have to go with younger, hungry players to do their best to lift Manchester United over these next two or three years.'
‘And obviously, Cristiano is getting on a bit. He certainly isn’t the player he was when he was in his 20s. And that happens, that’s football. He’s a goal threat but I think the rest of the game they need more, they need young, hungry players.
‘I think they’ve got good young players. I think Sancho will be better next year, I think Marcus will be better next year.'
Later, Rooney posted a photo of him alongside Jamie Carragher and presenter David Jones on his Instagram page, then Ronaldo used that opportunity to fire back at them, commenting "Two Jealous".
Earlier this week, Rooney revealed his desire to coach Manchester United but the Old Trafford camp has opted for Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as the replacement for interim coach Ralf Rangnick.
Should Rooney get his dream job, Ronaldo could leave Man Utd as the relationship between the two is starting to reveal its blemish.
Manchester United currently sits at 7th position, 3 points below the top four spot with several teams including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolves vying for that spot.
