A day after the execution of Lisa Montgomery, the United States Government, under the administration of President Donald Trump, has executed another death row inmate, Corey Johnson.
The 52-year-old inmate was pronounced dead at 11:34 pm on Thursday after he was lethally injected at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana. Before his execution, he was battling with the Covid-19 virus.
Johnson was sentenced to death for murdering seven people — Peyton Johnson, Louis Johnson, Bobby Long, Dorothy Armstrong, Anthony Carter, Linwood Chiles, and Curtis Thorne — in furtherance of his drug-trafficking activities.
Between 1989 and July 1992, Johnson and several co-conspirators were partners in a large drug-trafficking conspiracy based in Richmond, Virginia.
Johnson’s execution is coming less than a week before Trump leaves office and President-elect Joe Biden, a death penalty opponent, is sworn in.
The Trump administration resumed federal executions in 2020 after a 17-year hiatus. A dozen people have now been executed since July with one more, Dustin Higgs, 48, set for Friday.
