UCL: Bennacer's Goal Edges AC Milan Past Napoli In First Leg

AC Milan

AC Milan took a significant step towards their first Champions League semifinal appearance in 16 years with a 1-0 victory over Napoli in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Ismael Bennacer's goal was the decider in a closely contested match that took place on a rainy night at San Siro.

Napoli, who were playing their first-ever Champions League quarterfinal, started aggressively, seeking revenge for their recent 4-0 defeat to Milan in Serie A.

They had early chances with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's attempt blocked on the line and Piotr Zielinski's thunderous effort tipped over the crossbar by Milan keeper Mike Maignan.

Despite Napoli's dominance in the first half, it was Milan who took the lead just before halftime.

Brahim Diaz set up Bennacer, who struck a low shot inside the far post, giving Milan a crucial advantage.

Milan had a chance to double their lead when Simon Kjaer's header hit the crossbar and bounced down on the line, but the referee ruled that it did not cross over.

Napoli's chances further dwindled when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa received a second yellow card for pushing Theo Hernandez, leaving Napoli with 10 men for the final 16 minutes of the match.

Milan's victory puts them in a strong position ahead of the second leg, which will be played on April 18.

They are the only team to have defeated Napoli more than once this season in all competitions, and their fans are hopeful for a historic semifinal appearance in the Champions League after 16 years of absence.
