UCL: Lukaku, Barella Put Two Past Benfica To Give Inter Firs

Inter Milan

Inter Milan took a step closer to their first Champions League semifinal appearance since their 2010 victory, as they defeated Benfica 2-0 in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash on Tuesday.

The Italian giants found the back of the net in the second half through Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku to secure a crucial win on the road.

Barella opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a powerful header at the back post, connecting with a perfect cross from Alessandro Bastoni, who made a marauding run down the left flank. The goal gave Inter the lead and put them in control of the match.

In the 82nd minute, Inter was awarded a penalty after VAR review spotted a handball by Benfica captain Joao Mario. Referee Michael Oliver consulted the video monitor and confirmed the decision, allowing Lukaku, who came on as a substitute, to step up and convert the spot kick with composure.

The two-goal advantage gives Inter a significant upper hand heading into the second leg, which will be played at San Siro next Wednesday.

With their formidable home record and a strong position in the tie, Inter Milan are now favourites to progress to the semifinals, where they could potentially face their Italian rivals AC Milan or Napoli. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return leg, as Inter looks to make a historic run in this season's Champions League campaign.
