UCL Match Day 2: Winners And Losers

UCL Match Day 2: Winners And Losers

With matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Liverpool, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, and Manchester City all took vital points with a place in the knockout place in view.

AllNews takes a look at winners and losers of the UCL fixtures.

Liverpool (Winner) --- Liverpool vs Midtjylland (2-0)

The Reds kept going after losing Van Virgil Dijk to injury for almost the rest of the season - they won 2 consecutive wins after the loss of the Dutchman.

Anfield continues to be a fortress for Jurgen Klopp side despite the absence of fans from the stadium, the Premier League champions were less threatening in the first half

But finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the break when Trent Alexander-Arnold set up Diogo Jota for a tap-in.

A late penalty scored by substitute Mohamed Salah gave the scoreline the sealing off.

The manager left his first-choice attack of Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino on the bench against the Danes, giving his second string a chance to shine, and shine they did especially newcomers, Diogo Jota.

With all 6 points from the available 6, the Reds are properly poised to qualify as the group leader.

Manchester City (Winner) ---- Manchester City vs Olympique Marseille (3-0)

Pep Guardiola and his men continued to have a great run in the UCL compared to the EPL.

Ferran Torres, Ilkay Gundogan, and Raheem Sterling found the back of the net as Pep Guardiola's side stayed top of the standings on six points, three ahead of Porto and Olympiakos.

They are positioned as the group leader but with porosity behind, conceding goals could see that position shaken in coming weeks

Atletico Madrid (Winner) ---- Atletico Madrid vs Red Bull Salzburg (3-2)

Atletico fought back to win the game from 1-2 down in the second half with a quickfire double from Joao Felix to give Rojiblancos all three points.

Marcos Llorente had put Atletico ahead in the first half, but goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mergim Berisha swung the fixture in the favour of the visitors early in the second half.

But that lead was short-lived as Felix finished a sweeping Atletico move that left him with a tap-in to equalize, before lashing in the winner as the Salzburg defense stood static following a low cross into the box.

Atletico Madrid is now second behind Bayern Munich with 4 more games to go in the group stage.

Shakhtar Donetsk (Winner) ----- Shakhtar Donetsk vs Inter Milan (0-0)

Both sides fired blanks in Ukraine as none of the two sides could break the deadlock but Shakhtar would be much happy with the draw leading the group and properly positioned to qualify at least as runner up.

The morale is high defeating Real Madrid on matchday 1, a draw against Inter Milan, another draw, or a win against Gladbach in the next two games could push them very high in the group.

Real Madrid (Loser) --- Monchengladbach vs Real (2-2)

The Los Blancos scrap a point in Germany after going 2 goals down after 58 minutes with a brace from Marcus Thuram -  seemed the 13-time Champions will be going back to Spain without a point.

But with Karim Benzema and Casemiro's strikes, Real Madrid salvages a point and would look to add more to the points with 2 consecutive matches against Inter Milan but it would not be an easy feat with Antonio Conte's side strong both defensively and in the opposition final third.

They were tipped to be favourite for the game coming off the back of a 3-1 win in the El Clasico but all that seems to fiction as the Germans were incisive in their attack.

A draw and another loss could make the opportunity of qualifying for the knockout stage very difficult.

Olympique Marseille (Loser) ---- City vs Marseille (3-0)

Marseille has lost two consecutive games in a row in the CL, against Olympiacos, and City.

They sit at the bottom of the group with 0 point after 2 games and with matches against Porto in the next two fixtures, Marseille might not make the cut after match day 6.
