Uganda Election: 5 Things You Don't Know About Bobi Wine

Ugandan Pop Star, Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert, better known as Bobi Wine was born on 12 February 1982 in Nkozi Hospital, Uganda. He broke into the entertainment scene with his lead single, 'Sunda' featuring Ziggy D. He had his big break when he led the People Power, Our Power movement in opposition to President Yoweri Museveni.

He announced his candidacy for the 2021 Uganda general election in 2019. There is no doubt that the 38-years-old singer cum politician has definitely paved a successful path for himself in the Uganda entertainment industry and Political space.

Here are 5 things you probably didn’t know about the talented Uganda pop star cum politician, Bobi Wine

1. He Is A Pop Star

Bobi Wine is a top Ugandan pop star, songwriter, actor and a business mogul. Without prejudice, Bobi wine is one of Uganda's most prolific singer greatly loved by people. His music is also widely embraced at the grassroots level.

Wine who came to limelight through some of his singles such as 'Akagoma', 'Funtula' and 'Sunda' featuring Ziggy D has been praised for singing meaningful songs that impact lives. He was previously part of the Fire Base Crew group before he formed the Ghetto Republic of Uganja group. 

2. He Is An Amazing Actor

Aside from being a pop star, Bobi Wine is also a film actor who has starred in different local Ugandan movies. Wine was cast in Cleopatra Koheirwe's drama and Yogera film in 2010. In 2015 he played a lead role in the Twaweza-supported film Situka with Hellen Lukoma. He had also worked on a popular movie titled Divizionz amongst others.

3. He Also Has A Degree In Law

Many people don't know that the 38-year-old is also a lawyer aside been a pop star and a politician. Wine does not only have a law degree from the International University of East Africa (IUEA), he also has a diploma in music, dance, and drama from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda in 2016 and 2003 respectively.

4. He Is A Member Of Uganda Parliament

It will interest you to know that Bobi Wine has been a member of the Uganda parliament since July 11, 2017. He currently serves as the parliament member representing Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, in Uganda's Central Region.

In 2019, Wine revealed his intention to contest for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election after he had led the People Power, Our Power Movement in opposition to President Yoweri Museveni who they regard as a dictator.

Presently, Wine is the major contender and frontrunner challenging Museveni in the general election scheduled for Thursday, January 14, 2020, among 10 other opposition candidates.

Meanwhile, this has led to Wine gaining traction and a large following among young people in Uganda, where 80% of the population is under 30.

5. He Is Contesting For Uganda President

Bobi Wine is contesting for Uganda's number one job on the platform of National Unity Platform Party (NUPP) and he is contending with the embattled President Yoweri Museveni who has ruled Uganda for 34 years.

Wine who is seeking to unseat Uganda’s longterm ruler has amassed quite a number of fans not just in Uganda, but also in Nigeria and across Africa.

The opposition leader is seen as posing the strongest challenge to Museveni’s bid to win a sixth term in Thursday's election.
