Uganda military officers display the recovered guns and other equipment from the ADF rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At least five suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists have been killed and four sub-machine gun rifles with several rounds of ammunition recovered in areas of Katanga in Ituri province, Uganda.
Among the other items recovered were improvised explosive devices and communication equipment.
Col Deo Akiiki, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs' deputy spokesperson, confirmed the news and congratulated the soldiers on their successful mission.
“Congratulations to Maj General Dick Olum the overall Commander of Operation Shujja and your commanders of five battalions for the good work,” he said.
After several weeks of relative calm, rebel attacks in the area have recently resumed.
This came after a December 2022 operation in which 17 suspected ADF rebels were killed and 13 others were apprehended while raiding villages in western Uganda's Ntoroko District.
Following increased attacks in both countries, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November 2021 to conduct a joint military operation called Operation Shujaa against the ADF in the country's east.
In January 2023, Jacob Oboth Oboth, Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, told parliament that in 2022, 424 ADF terrorists were killed, 81 others were captured, 115 abductees were rescued, and 118 firearms with various ammunition and 10 IEDs (improvised explosive devices) were recovered.
