UI VC Crisis: External Council Members Walk Out Of Meeting

UI VC Crisis: External Council Members Walk Out Of Meeting

Jaju Muhammad and Mande Samaila who were appointed as the external governing council for overseeing the process of selecting a new Vice-Chancellor at the University of Ibadan (UI), walked out of the meeting organised yesterday to address petitions against the Senate of the institution.

Other members of the meeting such as Ademola Aremu and Abel Olorunnisola also walked out alongside the external council members. Our correspondent gathered that they walked out after about five and a half hours when the meeting commenced.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Tunji Oladejo, who was questioned by the media, revealed he had no knowledge of the incident as he was not present.

Further information gathered from a member of the council, according to Daily Trust, states that members walked out after efforts to ensure that the selection process of a new VC was free, fair, and transparent.

The council member also revealed that the external council members, Jaju Muhammad and Mande Samaila were acting on the directives of the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Federal Ministry of Education which asked the council to review the entire process including re-inviting shortlisted 18 candidates for the VC position.

It was gathered that the meeting was to discuss the validity of the election being conducted by the outgoing Vice-Chancellor who had earlier been instructed by the Federal Ministry of Education to restart the selection process.

This was allegedly the reason why the external council was designated to take charge of the selection process and to ensure compliance with NUC standards.

“You see those who staged walk-out were asking for the letter from Federal Ministry of Education and NUC. They were saying the Senate was wrong to have hurriedly met and ordered election within 24 hours. They were worried that the election did not follow due process. In fact, the election is already generating fresh crisis as many contestants pulled out of the election citing violation of FG directive and illegal process as reasons.

“The fundamental allegations levelled against the candidates have not been independently verified and a thorough investigation conducted. The petition was addressed to the Council and not the Senate. They left when it was obvious that due process will not be followed. I think they don’t want to be used to endorse illegality.”
