Ukraine has reported a significant victory in its ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces by reclaiming the strategic village of Klishchiivka in the east.
This success follows closely on the heels of Ukraine's recapture of the nearby village of Andriivka, marking the country's second substantial gain in three days.
The battle for Klishchiivka, which is located about 9 kilometers (6 miles) south of Bakhmut, had raged for weeks, and its fall to Ukrainian forces is a significant development in the ongoing conflict.
In a triumphant announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the soldiers responsible for retaking Klishchiivka, emphasizing the gradual restoration of Ukrainian territory around the Bakhmut area.
The victory in Klishchiivka comes shortly after Ukraine's successful operation to gain control of Andriivka. These territorial gains demonstrate Ukraine's determination to push back Russian forces and regain control of its land.
“Today, I would like to particularly commend the soldiers who, step by step, are returning to Ukraine what belongs to it, namely in the area of Bakhmut,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy said that Kyiv was “preparing new defence solutions for Ukraine” and that “air defence and artillery are the priority”, without providing details. It began its counteroffensive to clear Russian troops from its territory in June.
The recapture of Klishchiivka could be a crucial step in encircling the city of Bakhmut, which had fallen to Russian forces in May after a protracted and bloody battle.
