UN Reacts To Reports On Rogue Soldier In Borno

The United Nations (UN) has expressed displeasure over the incident in which a rogue soldier killed his colleague and a humanitarian worker in Borno State.

The UN made this known in a statement by its Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Matthias Schmale on Friday.

Schmale Sympathised with the family of the deceased humanitarian worker while calling for an immediate investigation into the matter.

Recall that the incident took place on Thursday at Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

“Yesterday’s killing of a staff member of the humanitarian non-governmental organization Meědecins du Monde in Damboa, Borno State is deeply disturbing and sad.

“On behalf of the United Nations, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the aid worker’s family and her colleagues.

“I also wish a speedy recovery to a pilot working with the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) who was injured in the deplorable attack by an apparently rogue soldier.

“All humanitarian staff working in north-east Nigeria deserve our fullest respect for their courage and commitment to stay and deliver life-saving assistance to people in need in often difficult and dangerous circumstances," the statement read.

Schmale further called for the protection of humanitarian workers in the sub-region.

He also applauded the swift interventions by other troops to prevent further loss of lives.
