UNFPA Donates Equipment, Refurbishes UNIMED Laboratory

The United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) has donated medical pieces of equipment to and renovated the Department of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, speaking during the launching of the equipment and the refurbished laboratory at the Pre-Degree hall, UNIMED, Akure Campus said the contribution would help the students' comprehension and performance during their training.

"This is not a question of making the students pass examinations but to ensure that the students who have already been well-trained can have competence and knowledge in the process of their training and experience almost real-life experience.

“This is a wonderful opportunity; a great achievement, and we thank God for the partnership, and we want to thank our partners for making this a reality.

“The donations are of different types, but they are all models; like the model of a woman that is pregnant, model of newborn baby, model of placenta among others,” he explained.

Fatusi, while speaking on the modern training at UNIMED, said one of the things “we do is to expose students to real-life patients without showing them and allow them to develop skills and competence in terms of working with a manikin ( one of the equipment donated).”

The Head of UNFPA, Lagos Liasion office, Dr Omolaso Omosehin represented by Dr Akinkumi Akinbajo, in his speech said the gesture by the agency is aimed at putting an end to maternal death by 2030.

Dr Omosehin also listed ending all forms of gender-based violence and female genital mutilation, early child marriage, and family planning needs, among other detrimental traditional procedures.
