To tackle the challenge of out-of-school children in Nigeria, the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is set to develop a new model by 2027.
A 2022 report by UNESCO estimated the current number of out-of-school children in Nigeria at 20 million.
According to a country development programme for 2023-2027 presented by UNICEF and obtained by The Punch, the UN agency is set to develop a sustainable model to address the out-of-school challenge.
“10 million children access formal or non-formal education; 4.8 million children access learning materials and 21 states scale up foundational literacy and numeracy; 22 states using integrated data system for sector planning and 12 states with improved adequacy, efficiency and equity in education finance,” the section on education read.
However, during a media dialogue for newsmen, Communications Specialist for UNICEF, Geoffrey Njoku, stated that UNICEF has supported the enrollment of 1.5 million girls in schools across Nigeria over the last five years using a new evidence-based approach.
He added that million children continued learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
