UNILAG Power Tussle: Buhari Sets Up Panel To Look Into Institution's Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari has set up a visitation panel to look into the current crisis rocking the leadership of the University of Lagos.

Making this disclosure on Friday, Ben Goong, spokesman of the ministry of education, in a statement said that the embattled Vice Chancellor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe and Wale Babalakin the pro-chancellor and chairman, the governing council of the institution have been directed to recuse themselves adding that a panel has been set up to probe the institution's crisis.

Goong in the statement also revealed that the President directed the panel to submit its report within two weeks.

The panel chaired by Tukur Sa’ad, former vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, as chairman, has  Victor Onuoha, Ikenna Oyindo, Ekanem Braide, Adamu Usman, and Jimoh Bankole as members.

Buhari who sacked Theophelous Soyombo, the Vice-Chancellor appointed by Babalakin, also directed that the senate of the university urgently convene to appoint an acting Vice-Chancellor pending the time that the panel will submit its report.

Allnews had earlier reported how the Wale Babalakin led governing council sacked Ogundipe as the vice-chancellor of the institution.

Ogundipe's removal was met with a series of uproar from stakeholders of the university.

While the Institution's chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the senate kicked against his removal of Ogundipe, the governing council insisted that Ogundipe should be removed as the vice-chancellor.
