UNILORIN Changes Post UTME Grading System For 2021-22 Admission

UNILORIN Changes Post UTME Grading System For 2021-22 Admiss

The Federal University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has changed its grading system for the 2021-22 admission session which has led to confusion for so many candidates who have applied to the school for their tertiary education.

The school commenced the post UTME for candidates on Monday December 13, 2021 for the first batch of students -- the exam which is currently taking place in the school's ICT building will span for a week to end on Saturday December 18, 2021.

The usual Grading System

Usually, the school used a percentage grading system for the students. The exam has 50 objective questions for a period of 20 mins or more. At the end of the exam, the result is multiplied by 2 to give a 100% score.

The passing score is set at 50% for all courses offered in the University -- although, the 50% score is not the cut off for some courses in the school like Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, Law etc.

Aside from the cut-off score in the post utme, students are required to have a certain score (cut-off) in their JAMB for post UTME or a score in their A' Level or first degree (Credit/Class) for Post Direct Entry candidates.

After all these requirements are met, then the student can wait and expect to see his name on the admission list.

The new Grading System

In an unprecedented move, the University changed the arrangement. According to some registration centres we reached out to, they noticed some of the changes during the pre-admission registration process.

The school's portal automatically selected the best five O' level results for the candidates. Before it wasn't like that, candidates can manually select them. Although according to these registration centres, it is a good thing as less experienced candidates doing the registration themselves can pick irrelevant subjects during the registration which could affect their admission qualification.

The more obvious change in the grading system was in the score. Candidates were scored in Post UTME, not over 100!

The grading system is still over 100 but several factors are in consideration.

First, the Jamb result occupies 50%, Post Utme occupies 30% and O' Level takes the remaining 20%.

The school has not formally released an explanation to these scores but the logical thinking based on previous assessments used by the school serves as the basis for these explanations.

Since the post Utme occupies 30%, the results were scored over 30. So candidates seeing 20, 18, 16 for their post-utme scores translate into 20/30, 18/30, 16/30.

Since the Jamb scores occupy 50%, candidates will be graded on how good their result is with 200+ meaning 25% and above. Candidates with 190 below will likely have 24% and below.

The remaining 20% goes to the O' Level -- since the school portal automatically picks 5 best scores from the WAEC, NECO submitted by candidates, that will be used to grade them.

For direct entry candidates especially A' Levels, they are graded using the 16 points system with the average set at 8 points. Students with 8 points and above will have 25% and more, while 7 points below will represent 24% and below.

*Please note, these are assumptions as we await the school's further breakdown of their grading system.
