UNILORIN: Reactions Trail Increased Student Fees

UNILORIN: Reactions Trail Increased Student Fees

Following the increased fees by the management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), students have shared varied reactions, with most of them condemning the development.

UNILORIN recently increased its students' fees, maintaining that it became necessary due to Nigeria's economic situation.

AllNews Nigeria reached out to some students of the university (whose identities have been changed) to get their position on the hiked fees and they had some interesting responses.

John Aremu, a final-year student of the Department of Agriculture, described the development as "nonsense".

He condemned the university for blaming the increase on the economic situation of the country.

"It's nonsense! Taking advantage of the students and laying it all on the fact that the economy is getting bad or bad already rather, as though we that will pay are not affected.

"It's just rubbish, considering the fact it's a federal school," he expressed.

A 200-level student from the Faculty of Education, Bisola Gbadamosi, expressed that students were shocked to see the increased fees after checking their portals.

Gbadamosi maintained that the increase is not the problem but the deadline for the payment.

She added that some parents are not buoyant enough to meet the deadline.

"Some of us already told our parents that our fees cannot be more than 30k only for us to check the portal and we were indeed shocked.

"The increment isn't even the problem now, the time allotted for the payment is too small.

"What of those students that can't really afford to pay in two weeks?

"Not all parents have money available all the time. I'm not even talking for myself now."

Another student, Opeyemi Adedeji argued that the university is bent on taking out the anger of the impasse with the government on the students.

"I'm not in support of course.

"They are trying to vent their ASUU-FG strike anger on us students by increasing the school fees which is not fair.

"And worst, no considerable time duration was given."

However, Blessing Chukwuma, another final-year student from the Faculty of Engineering expressed her indifference to the situation.

She maintained if the students could, the fees would have been reduced.

'They increased it and we move. If we had a choice, it would be reduced already.

"Even the Student Union was unable to do anything about it, so we move," she added.
