UNILORIN Student Commits Suicide Over N500,000 Unpaid Loan

UNILORIN Student Commits Suicide Over N500,000 Unpaid Loan

A 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Sanni Hameedat, has committed suicide following her inability to repay a loan obtained from an online loan platform.

Vanguard reports that Hameedat was confirmed dead at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH)

The late student was said to have taken sniper before she was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance following a call by the porters in her hostel.

Mouthpiece Nigeria, however, reports that Hameedat had given the N500,000 she borrowed to a boy she met on Snapchat, a social media platform.

The management of the Rubiks Private Hostel where the deceased disclosed that the student was enrolled in her SIWES programme before her death.

Rubik's management further revealed that Hameedat had drunk a bottle of Sniper, a pesticide, unknown to her roommate who had gone to bed early.

Her roommate was said to have woken up in the middle of the night to find the deceased in distress and vomiting.

The management maintained that pressure from the app agents who demanded fast repayment of the loan as well as her brother’s inability to assist her financially led to depression and her consequent death.

“The cause of suicide was traced to financial misappropriation. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother. She crossed paths with a guy on Snapchat and developed a friendship.

“When the boy claimed that his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, the compassionate and emotional lady decided to help him by lending him half of the N1 million she held for her mother. And the boy promised to repay the borrowed money.

“However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy abruptly cut off all up all contact, blocking her. This left her deeply troubled and in order for her to make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.”

The deceased, thereafter, managed to gather N450,000 from the loan apps, after which she added her savings of N50,000 to make up the borrowed N500,000.

“Alarmed, the roommate sought help, and she was rushed to UITH before being declared dead,” the statement concluded.

In recent times, many Nigerians have reportedly opted for suicide through the use of the infamous insecticide as a way of leaving life's harsh realities behind.

At the time of filing this report, the university management had not spoken about the unfortunate incident.
