UPDATE: Baruwa Gas Explosion Claims 8 Lives, Razed 25 Houses, 16 Shops

The Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) reports that the Baruwa gas explosion has claimed 8 lives, razed 25 houses, and 16 shops.

AllNews reports that the Baruwa gas explosion emanated from Best Roof gas plant, Cardos road, Ipaja. According to investigations, the Baruwa gas explosion was an entirely avoidable incident caused by carelessness on the part of the operators.

Confirming the incident, LASEMA Director-General, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in a statement, said, “On arrival at the scene of the incident, it was observed that there was a gas explosion at the aforementioned location.

“Further investigation at the scene revealed that the gas station belonging to Best Roof Cooking Gas exploded by burning buildings around. The cause of the explosion could not be ascertained at the moment.

“Unfortunately, four mortalities were recorded and several others injured.

“A combined effort of the Agency’s Tiger team, Dolphin team, LRU Fire, LASG Fire Service, NPF, NUPENG, and LNSC are on ground to curtail the spread of the fire to other buildings.”

However, Lagosians are encouraged to report dangerous practices within their neighborhoods to the relevant agencies which include the Lagos Safety Commission (LSC), and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) so that the government can engage in more prevention and precautionary measures including issuing contravention notices and sealing up premises to prevent these types of disasters.
