US Election: Nancy Pelosi Formally Expresses Desire To Rerun For Speaker Of House

US Election: Nancy Pelosi Formally Expresses Desire To Rerun

Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has formally indicated her desire to return as Speaker.

In a letter sent to her colleagues - Democrats - she declared, "Our vision for the next two years must be built on the success of [the] Democratic House Majority in the 116th Congress, and to harness the extraordinary visions, values, and vibrancy of our Caucus to secure the progress that the American people deserve.

"in that spirit, I am writing to request your support to be re-elected as Speaker."

The Democrats have been unable to secure a majority in the House, despite maintaining control of the House, as expected; owing to the Republican's strong gains in the House Tuesday - winning five seats.

Speaking with her Democratic peers, she said the election had been a "life-or-death fight" America's democracy.

She said, "This has been a life-or-death fight for the very fate of our democracy. We did not win every battle, but we did win the war.

"You hold your head up high. We helped Joe Biden get that mandate.

"Ours will be a government that fights for the people's interests, not special interests -- championing progress for seniors, veterans, immigrants, LGBTQ Americans, women, young people, and front-line communities."

Pelosi, 80, emerged the first woman to be elected as the Speaker of the House in 2007, serving until 2011, and winning reelection in 2019.
