Trump says, after meeting with the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, that the United States and Mexico's relationship has never "been closer that it is right now."
Prior to this, Trump and Obrador, who was campaigning for presidency, had a frosty relationship, as Obrador condemned Trump's description of Mexicans, calling them "drug dealers," and "rapists."
Trump's decision to build a wall along the US-Mexico border deepened the political rift between both leaders, as anti-immigration policies were the foundation of Trump's campaign.
Trump said of Lopez, “We’ve had a very outstanding relationship… The relationship between the United States and Mexico has never been closer than it is right now."

Addressing Lopez, Trump said, “Each of us was elected on the pledge to fight corruption, return power to the people and put the interests of our countries first.
"I do that and you do that."
Lopez also channeled some amiable words in Trump's way, showing gratitude for Trump's "understanding" and their "very good political relations"
Obrador said, "I want to thank you for your understanding."
Obrador added that his visit to the United States was to show that the people of the US and "their president" have shown "kindness and respect" for the people of Mexico, as the US has refrained from treating Mexico "as a colony."
“That’s why I’m here. To express to the people of the United States that their president has behaved with us with kindness and respect."
The meeting between both presidents was to mark the launch of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement trade deal.
