US Striker Swanson Undergoes Successful Surgery, To Miss Wom

Mallory Swanson

Mallory Swanson, the 24-year-old striker for the United States women's national soccer team, revealed on Tuesday that she had undergone successful surgery after suffering a torn patella tendon ahead of this year's Women's World Cup.

Swanson, who played a key role in helping the US win their fourth world title in 2019, was expected to be a crucial player in the upcoming tournament after scoring seven goals in international competitions this year.

Swanson sustained the injury during the US' friendly match against Ireland in Austin, Texas on Saturday.

She had to be carried off on a stretcher in the late first half, leaving fans and teammates dismayed.

Taking to Instagram, Swanson expressed her shock and gratitude for the support she has received.

"This is hard. I'm in shock and don't have much to say other than thank you to everyone for the messages.

"I feel the love and prayers, and holding them close to my heart," Swanson wrote.

She also expressed her appreciation for the medical team, coaches, and teammates who have been supporting her throughout the process.

The injury comes at a crucial time as Tuesday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to the Women's World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The US will be playing against Ireland again later on Tuesday in their final friendly match before head coach Vlatko Andonovski names the 23-player squad for the tournament.

Swanson's absence will be a significant blow to the team, and her recovery will be closely monitored as the US prepares for the Women's World Cup.
