Use The Media To Spread Love - Osun NYSC Coordinator To Corps Members

Use The Media To Spread Love - Osun NYSC Coordinator To Corp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Osun State Coordinator, Winifred Shokpeka, has charged the 2021 Batch C Stream I corps members to always use the news media which has made the world a global village to project themselves, the scheme, and the nation positively.

Shokpeka also charged the corps members not to use their social media handles to spread hatred or fake news but rather to spread stories of triumph, kindness, and happiness.

The Osun NYSC State Coordinator gave the charge on Tuesday during the swearing-in and official opening ceremony of the 2021 Batch C Stream I orientation course at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Ede, Osun State.

Shokpeka while congratulating the newly sworn-in corps members reminded them that the NYSC scheme is the vehicle that availed them the platform to practice what they have been taught in their various institutions while also creating an avenue for them to gain the prerequisite experience and skills needed to start off on their chosen life career.

According to her, "The scheme further avails you the opportunities as patriotic citizens to contribute your quota toward building a united, peaceful and egalitarian society."

While reminding the corps members of their role in ensuring Nigeria's identity which is very critical at this time, she added that as true compatriots, they should commit themselves to the tenets of national integration and unity.

In her words, "You have been drawn from different states of the federation, from different culture, background, academic, religion and ideological inclinations and are brought together to integrate, interact and work as a team to achieve the lofty ideals of our founding father.

"Shun all forms of religious intolerance or ethnic bigotry and learn to embrace and respect one another's differences. Let us concentrate on things that unite us rather than those that divide us. This is why the orientation course is very critical to the attainment of national unity, integration, and peaceful coexistence."

The Osun NYSC boss enjoined the corps members that even as the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is still on, they should take their health seriously and avail themselves of vaccination against the deadly coronavirus and ensure strict adherence to the protocols of regular hand washing and use of the facemask for prevention.

In his address, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim appealed to the corps members not to engage in night journeys and advised that after 6 pm, shelter should be sought in NYSC, military, and police formations.

In his words, "I hasten to add that you avoid embarking on frivolous journeys whether within or outside the state. Many have gone through such unnecessary journeys, thereby putting their families in grief. If there is need for you to travel outside the state, permission must be obtained from the State Coordinator, using the right channel."

General Shuaibu charged the corps members to live by the motto of the scheme which is service and humility and let it be their guiding principle all through the duration of the programme.

He also advised the NYSC members to shun involvement in politics or show partisanship in national politics adding that it is only permissible after their demobilization from service.

"I charge you to love and co-exist harmoniously with members of your host community. As much as possible, try and make a positive impact in the community by leaving it better than you met it. Get integrated into the community - learning the language and culture of the people, knowing their norms, and avoiding their taboos."

Out of the 1,650 corps members which were expected in Osun, a total of 1,544 which comprised 766 males and 778 female corps members partook in the swearing-in ceremony.
