A chaotic scene unfolded at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, California, as approximately 200 inmates rushed correction officers, resulting in the hospitalization of nine individuals.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the incident left eight corrections officers and one incarcerated man injured during a contraband investigation.

Authorities described a harrowing scene where officers were escorting an inmate across the prison yard for a contraband investigation when suddenly, around 200 incarcerated individuals surged towards them, launching a violent attack with fists and rocks.

In response to the escalating situation, officers were compelled to deploy a rifle warning round before resorting to the use of chemical agents and non-lethal impact rounds to regain control and quell the disturbance.

Following the altercation, eight staff members and one inmate were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Ironwood State Prison, a minimum-medium security facility located in the desert east of Los Angeles, has been operational since 1994, housing approximately 2,500 male inmates.
