Ward-Prowse Joins West Ham From Southampton In £30 Million Deal

Ward-Prowse Joins West Ham From Southampton In £30 Million

James Ward-Prowse is officially a West Ham United midfielder following a £30 million move from Southampton on Monday.

The 28-year-old joined the Hammers on a four-year deal, ending a 20-year spell on the south coast, which began at the tender age of eight.

"I'm buzzing to be here at West Ham United," Ward-Prowse told the club's official website.

"From the outside looking in, this is a club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this club."

Manager David Moyes added: "He's performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season.

"His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us - he'll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch."

Ward-Prowse becomes the Hammers' second signing this summer, following the arrival of Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax in a deal thought to be worth about £35 million.

It is thought that the Englishman would be a replacement for England midfielder Declan Rice, who West Ham sold to Arsenal for £105 million.

He captained Southampton and made 410 senior appearances but could not keep them in the Premier League last term.

The midfielder is renowned for being a set-piece specialist as only David Beckham has scored more than his 17 goals from direct free-kicks in the Premier League.
