Warri-Itakpe Rail Service Suspended Following Derailment

The Warri-Itakpe rail service has been suspended by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) after it derailed at kilometre 30 Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track.

About 300 passengers were left stranded inside the Kogi forest on Sunday when the train derailed.

Per reports, the train left Warri early on Sunday morning and got derailed at about 12 noon inside the thick forest between Ajaokuta and Itakpe.

Confirming the incident, the Coordinator of the Warri-Itakpe train service, Sanni Abdulganiyu, stated that security operatives were alerted immediately and sent to the scene.

According to him, no fatality or casualty was recorded.

“The Warri-Itakpe train service WITS 01 derailed at about 12:30hrs of January 22, 2023.

“The cause of the derailment is not yet determined.

"Due to this incident, the service along the corridor has been suspended. Further details would be communicated to members of the public", Abdulganiyu added.
