We Die From Thirst, Hunger In Desert — Libyan Immigrant

Hundreds of Nigerian youths leave the country in search of greener pastures abroad

Simply Identified as Gaddafi, a man who has lived in Libya for over eight years told AllNews Nigeria that some immigrants die from thirst and hunger while trying to cross the Agadez desert into Libya or other foreign destinations.

The young man who lived and got married to a Nigerian in the country said the challenges they face are huge but many still risk their lives to find greener pastures.

He said some of the challenges include thirst and hunger, as some risk their water finishing before they get to their destination, while most times, robbers rob them of food, water, and other valuables.

According to Ghaddafi, border security agents along the Libya borders also tax them heavily, leaving them to enter Libya almost penniless, this is in addition to great chances of falling into the hands of insurgents.

Narrating how they sneak into Libya, Ghaddafi said they are usually dropped off along a border town, then they are placed one on top of the other and covered with trampoline as they drive into town at about 3:00 a.m

"When you get into town and unfortunately you don't know anyone, it is another big challenge.

"But if you're lucky to meet people from Nigeria or other African countries, then they will help you.

"When you go to search for a job, you'll meet many people who speak different languages.

"The Arabs can be very racist too. You'll finish a job for them and they will tell you to leave right away without paying.

"Others will pay without removing a single Rubba.

"Travelling these ways are really dangerous but when you arrive safely and get a job in an Arab house or get to do some menial jobs, the pay is good," said Ghaddafi.

The young man who is raising his family in Libya said the racism is what disturbs them most as they are subjected to it too many times.
