The World Health Organization (WHO) says COVID-19 hit a record of 9.5 million cases around the world last week, marking a 71 percent weekly surge. However, the number of recorded deaths declined.
The UN health agency, in its weekly report said the weekly record amounted to 9,520,488 new cases, with 41,178 deaths recorded last week.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday that "Last week, the highest number of COVID-19 cases were reported so far in the pandemic."
“Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people, and it’s killing people."
WHO also noted that the more infectious Omicron variant appears to produce less severe disease, but should not be categorised as mild one.
WHO has called on the general public to step up measures to fight the pandemic. Each should get vaccinated, maintain proper physical distancing and wear masks properly.
