A former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Sunny Bekanwa has been remanded in prison.

Bekanwa who was a Caretaker Committee Chairman under the administration of Nyesom Wike and a lecturer at Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic was remanded by a Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt.

Bekanwa was prosecuted for allegedly sponsoring the cultists who killed two prominent sons of Ogoni, Dr Lucky Keena and Engineer Deyaa Dunsara, in Khana Local Government Area.

He was charged with murder, cultism, and sponsorship of cult activities.

It was gathered that some people have been standing trial at the Rivers State High Court for the same offence.

When the matter came up for plea, Godday Amadi, the prosecution counsel, informed the court of remand proceedings against Bekanwa.

Amadi asked the court to remand the suspect at the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility, citing Section 302 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Rivers State to enable him to amend his charge at the State High Court to include other defendants standing trial for the same offence.

The Chief Magistrate, Nnenda Obiageri-Onugbum, after listening to the prosecution and the defence counsel, Emmanuel George, ordered that the accused be remanded in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre and adjourned until December 1, 2023, for proper arraignment and possible bail consideration.

The court also directed that Henry Barikui-Dele, who is also charged with cultism, possession of illegal firearms, and the murder of Keena and Dunsara, be remanded in the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility following the remand warrant presented by the prosecution counsel.
