Why Fela Never Won An Award In His Lifetime — Seun Kuti

Fela's son Seun Kuti has revealed why his late father never won an award during his lifetime.

Seun disclosed that the Afrobeat legend's cabinet was empty when he was alive and that he only started getting awarded after his demise.

While receiving a posthumous award on behalf of his dad from the SIGMA club during their 70th anniversary, Seunn revealed that after Fela's death, only popular singer Ebenezer Obey paid the bereaved family a condolence visit.

"My father did not receive any awards when he was alive because he was not invited to any", Seun stated. "Fela's award cabinet was about empty when he was alive. It is such a good thing to have this award on behalf of my family.

"Chief Ebenezer Obey was the only one who came and gave me money. I was 14 years old at the time and N20,000 was a lot of money.

"That is why when I am asked who my favourite musician is, I am not afraid to say his name (Obey).

"However, I would not like to diminish the efforts made by the late Victor Uwaifo who was a good friend of my dad too before his death."
