Why Kano is hosting ECOWAS parliament – Barau Jibrin

Senator Barau Jibrin, the Acting Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate disclosed that the second extraordinary session of the parliament was held in Kano State to bring issues closer to the people.

Jibrin revealed this on Monday in an interview with journalists ahead of the ECOWAS Parliament proceedings, which are set to start on Tuesday.

According to him, this is the first time an ECOWAS session or meeting of this kind is being held in a place like Kano.

“We brought this session here to bring it closer to the people so that Kano people will know about the ECOWAS parliament and the parliament will go deeper into our various societies.”

The acting Parliament Speaker added that the session would discuss all the issues and challenges affecting the now 12-member Economic Community of West African States.

“As a parliament, we have no constraint on any issue affecting the ECOWAS as a community. We would discuss all the issues affecting the community including the issue of security,” he said.

Jibrin also stated that the delegation of the Parliament from Togo who have not yet come to the session would be in attendance before the 5-day event ends.

“You know there was no election (of the parliament’s representatives in Togo) but now that elections have been held, we expect them to join us at the parliament where they would be sworn in,” he added.
