Why NFF named Finidi George as Super Eagles coach

Why NFF named Finidi George as Super Eagles coach

The leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation on Monday named Finidi George as the new Super Eagles coach after taking charge of the team on interim basis during the last international window in March.

However some hours before the announcement, the Senate Committee on Sports summoned the NFF bigwigs headed by Ibrahim Gusau, the technical department led by Augustine Eguavoen and the Technical Committee.

They made an appearance before the Committee and made their briefings on modalities for the next 2026 World Cup qualifiers against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and Cheetahs of Benin Republic.

The hasty nature of the summon and the need to establish some measure of continuity necessiated the announcement of Finidi as the substantive coach of the Super Eagles albeit there has been no further details from the close door meetings with the Senate Committee.

By becoming Nigeria's 41st men's head coach of the national team, the former Ajax and Real Betis star is guaranteed to be on the saddle for the World Cup qualifiers in June and perhaps September's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Nigeria's Sports minister, John Enoh had also  assured that the new coach will be unveiled before the end of April.
