Based on the cartoon characters created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom and Jerry follows the titular characters in a hotel as they try to put aside their differences and face a staff member who is tasked with dealing with them.
When the trailer was released about three months ago, it came as a surprise to see Tom and Jerry ( and a few other characters) just the way they are in the animated short series.
Now, thanks to a tweet by Fandango, an explanation has been given by the film's director Tim Story. He said it was important to have the titular characters in their 2D form as a way of giving homage to the cartoons.

His words: "It was important to have the animated characters be in 2D because the classic cartoons were in 2D. We thought it was the best way to give homage to what the cartoons have always been."
Tom and Jerry has a theatrical release date of February 26, 2021, with it also being made available for streaming on HBO Max. It stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Pena, Colin Jost, Rob Delaney, Ken Jeong, and Pallavi Sharda.
