The National Film Video & Censors Board (NFVCB) has disclosed why they will soon ban smoking from Nollywood films.
The revelation was made during the weekend by the NFVCB executive director, Adedayo Thomas, during an entertainment industry stakeholders roundtable in Lagos, as reported by The Cable.
According to Adedayo, the latest move of the board comes on the heels of increased concerns about emerging evidence linking the entertainment industry with the increased use of tobacco and its effects on public health.
The recent concern is also shared by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and while addressing the issue, the executive director stated that a marketing mix to promote smoking on set by the tobacco industry.
“Stakeholders observed that smoking in movies and the entertainment sector is a pathway to young people embracing smoking", Adedayo said.
"The tobacco industry uses a sophisticated marketing mix to promote smoking on set and in the entertainment sector.
"Entertainment stakeholders are deliberately targeted by the tobacco industry either through financial inducement, misinformation, and other subtle approaches to further glamorize smoking in the entertainment sector.”
Speaking further, he said that the board ensure stricter awareness on film stakeholders as it gets ready to enforce the non-classification of Nigerian films showing characters smoking.
