Why X users will experience potential follower reductions

X, the social media platform, issued a warning to its users regarding potential reductions in follower counts as part of a proactive initiative to tackle spam and bots.

The announcement, made by X's Safety account, highlighted the company's efforts to enforce platform rules against manipulation and spam.

This move comes after recent appointments in X's safety team, including Kylie McRoberts as Head of Safety and Yale Cohen as Head of Brand Safety and Advertiser Solutions.

CEO Elon Musk has prioritized addressing spam since November 2022, aiming to improve the platform's integrity.

Despite previous measures such as requiring payment for verification, spam remains a persistent challenge.

Bots with verified blue checks and explicit spam-promoting adult content continue to evade detection, complicating X's efforts to maintain a spam-free environment.

Musk's concerns about spam were evident during negotiations for the Twitter deal, where he questioned the accuracy of bot counts.

Despite ongoing challenges, X continues to report record traffic, although it remains unclear whether these figures account for bots and spam.

The proactive initiative by X's safety team involves casting a wide net to remove spam and bots, potentially leading to reductions in follower counts for affected users.

X has provided a form for users to appeal if they believe they have been inadvertently impacted by the cleanup effort.
