Wimbledon Alters Men's Doubles To Best Of Three Sets

Wimbledon has announced that the men's doubles format will be changed from best-of-five sets to best-of-three sets from this year's tournament.

The All England Club announced the switch on Wednesday to bring it in line with the other three Grand Slam tournaments which stage the event over three sets.

It stated that the decision was reached after a "wide-ranging consultation," adding that it would provide "greater certainty" when scheduling matches during the event,” and encouraged more players to enter the men's doubles at the grass-court major.

Australia's Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell won the men's doubles trophy at Wimbledon in July 2022.

The Australian duo beat Croatia's Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 6-4 7-6 (10-2) in an epic which lasted four hours 11 minutes.

Before the sets were reduced, Australia's Nick Kyrgios had taken a swipe at the All England Club for having to play five sets at SW19.

"I think it is the stupidest thing ever," said Nick who at that time withdrew prior to the doubles starting in order to prioritise his singles campaign.

"I don't know why it is best of five sets. No one wants to play best-of-five-set doubles, no one wants to watch best-of-five-set doubles."
