Joseph Kabungo, a doctor working for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has died in Abuja.
Reports reveal that the late Kabungo was the doping officer for the second leg of the match between Nigeria and Ghana that took place in Abuja on Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.
Kabungo is from Zambia and died shortly after the match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
A Ghanaian sports journalist, Collins Atta Poku, who was present at the stadium gave an account of how Kabungo met his death.
According to the pressman, Kabungo was beaten by the irate fans who invaded the stadium after the match ended. Poku said the CAF official was beaten by the individuals who stepped on him.
"They beat him, he fell, and they threaded on him. He lost consciousness and was rushed to an ambulance closer to the Ghana dressing room for CPR", Poku said.
"The entire Ghanaian contingent watched on as resuscitation attempts were made with an oxygen mask. He was taken to the hospital later and now, this. Sad", the tweet by the journalist ends.
Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and CAF are yet to comment on Kabungo's death but it has been reported that his family, the Zambia FA, and the government of Zambia have been notified.
Speaking on the tragedy, BBC journalist Osasu Obayiuwana said in a tweet: "Sad news: I understand that an official for the @NGSuperEagles vs @GhanaBlackstars match (not a referee or assistant referee) died in #Abuja today.
"His name is Dr. Joseph Kabungo from Zambia. He was on duty as a Doping officer. He collapsed suddenly and died. Cause of death not confirmed yet. His family, the Zambia FA, and the government of Zambia have been duly informed.
“If the death of #Zambian doctor Dr. Joseph Kabungo at the #Abuja stadium was caused by being attacked by the #Nigerian fans who invaded the pitch after the @NGSuperEagles lost the @FIFAWorldCup ticket to @GhanaBlackstars, @thenff would be in terrible trouble with @FIFAcom."
