It's official! WWE returnee John Cena is going up against the Universal Champion Roman Reigns in this year's Summerslam.
Cena's unexpected return at the Money in the Bank event was met with excitement by the WWE Universe and the following night, he revealed that he was back because of Roman Reigns.
During Friday's episode of SmackDown, the F9: The Fast Saga star tossed superstar Baron Corben out of the ring and signed a contract to face Reigns at the upcoming pay-per-view.
Since winning the Universal Championship, Roman Reigns has turned heel, dubbing himself 'The Tribal Chief' and saying he is one at the head of the table.
Reigns' arrogance obviously got to Cena who saw it fit to return and humble him. But like so many before it, this is most likely a storyline that was written to bolster WWE events as fans have now returned to watch them live.
John Cena
Cena has been away for some time shooting several Hollywood projects while Reigns only took a short break from wrestling due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has since shown spectacular form.
Roman Reigns
WWE fans know that Cena remains one of the superstars with the most impressive records. Added to that, he is no pushover and has faced some of the toughest in the business, coming out on top. But his next bout will be his most challenging in recent times because, in terms of strength and tenacity, both men could be said to be equals.
WWE Summerslam 2021 is slated for August 21, 2021, and when it arrives, either John Cena or Roman Reigns will be the last man standing.
