Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has denounced the current values upheld by the Nigerian society, highlighting the role models that internet fraudsters, otherwise known as Yahoo Boys, have become.
Alison-Madueke made this known at a virtual event that also had former President Goodluck Jonathan present in where she spoke on the negative impact such values hold for Nigerians while speaking on her work "talking about fatherless homes and the impact they have on our children."
She also explained the need to groom "responsible" men of the future because "if you plant yam, you cannot harvest plantain," a proverb that emphasizes the need for families to take on the responsibility of building the characters if their kids.

“The ones that have swag, the Yahoo Yahoo boys, as my son would say; these, in short, are the role models they are looking at. These are the ones that reinforce negative societal norms and values," she said.
“This is a travesty of an unfolding tragedy for us. Why have I spent time talking about fatherless homes and the impact they have on our children? The truth of the matter is that an irresponsible boy tends to become an irresponsible man and it is therefore a vicious cycle. If you plant yam, you cannot harvest plantain.”
