Yobe: Buni Flags Off 16-Day Activism Against Gender-Based Vi

The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni has flagged off a 16-day activism campaign against gender-based violence against women and girls in the state. 

The theme of the activism campaign is "United activism to end violence against women and girls".

The flag-off took place on Friday at the banquet hall of Government House Damaturu with the participants drawn from the UN, security agencies, NGOs, and other technical working groups of the United Nations Population Fund.

Governor Buni was represented by his Deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana.

Gubana said the Buni-led administration was focused on formulating policies and programmes to address challenges faced by women and girls in the state.

He added that the policies would also stand for other vulnerable groups such that their dignity, fundamental human rights, and general well-being would be protected. 

This was contained in a statement by the spokesperson to the deputy governor, Hussaini Mai Suleh. 

 According to the statement, "The Governor maintained protecting and promoting the welfare and concern of women is one of the cardinal principles of our administration."

The governor said he has already assented to the justice sector reform and the violence against person prohibition, and child protection law to institutionalize the required laws to facilitate the prosecution of offenders. 

He further explained that three special courts were established for the handling of gender-based violence cases to ensure swift dispensation of justice for victims. 

He also urged the security agencies, community and Religious leaders as well as the ministry of justice to ensure the support of Government efforts and ensure the elimination of violence against women and girls.

Governor Buni was also presented with an award of excellence by the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hajiya Hauwa Bah Abubakar in recognition of his achievements in assenting laws and policies that promotes the rights of women and children in Yobe state.
