Yobe: Gunmen kill police officer set home on fire in gruesom

Sule Babur, a police officer from Yobe State, has been assassinated by gunmen suspected to be terrorists.

The dead was assassinated at his home in the Mairi village, Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of the state.

DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the state's Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that after murdering the victim, the perpetrators burned down his residence.

“The perpetrators also set his house ablaze. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and an investigation is urgently needed to bring the culprits to justice,” Abdulkarim said.

The sad event occurred only hours after police said they had launched an investigation into the suspected assassination of an inspector in the Okokomaiko neighbourhood of Ojo, Lagos state, by some naval officers.

The spokesperson for Lagos Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the officer and his colleagues attempted to impound the navy officers' bikes on Saturday when they were on patrol. The officers were wearing muftis and drove against traffic.

According to the spokesman, the naval personnel resisted being taken into custody and fought with the police.

Other navy officers showed up to support their comrades, he said.

A police officer slumped during the altercation, according to Hundeyin, and was subsequently pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, gunmen have reportedly kidnapped a police orderly and driver working with the paramount ruler of Rumu-Elechi community in Nkpolu-Orowurokwo, Chief Cornwell Ihunwo around Eagle Island, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

An Executive member of Diobu Vigilante and Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu-Orowurokwo Godstime Ihunwo, who confirmed the unfortunate incident said it happened around 8 pm.

The victims were abducted on Saturday at the residence of the monarch.

Ihunwo alleged that the intent of the kidnap was the traditional ruler, condemning the move to abduct the community leader.

He said, “I received a call about the abduction of HRH Cornwell Ihunwo at about 9 pm on Saturday 22nd June 2024. I rushed down to his house at Eagle Island where I met him. Chief Cornwell told me it was his driver and Police orderly who were abducted.

“We condemn the planned abduction of HRH Cornwell Ihunwo and call on the Police to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.”

Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
