Yobe: Resident Doctors Meet Buni, Reject Nationwide Strike

Yobe: Resident Doctors Meet Buni, Reject Nationwide Strike

The Yobe State chapter of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has met with the state governor over the five-day warning strike embarked on by the national body across the country.

The resident doctors in the state during the meeting with Governor Mai Mala Buni, said the association resolved not to join the warning strike.

The association's president in the state, Dr Mai Bukar Kalli, said their decision was reached considering the support Governor Buni has given to the health sector in the state.

He explained that the governor has always met their demands, especially on the improvement of service delivery and provision of health equipment.

The governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Baba Mallam Wali.

As contained in a statement on Wednesday by Shuaibu Abdullahi, Press Secretary to the SSG, Kalli noted that the state was one of the states recuperating from the effects of the Boko Haram insurgency.

He stressed that the insurgency has created setbacks in the state's sectors which included health.

He added that joining the warning strike would only bring more harm to the post-insurgency recovery process of the health sector.

Kalli maintained that most of their members were being sponsored by the Governor Buni-led administration which has been meeting their demands.

"We are right now in very harsh weather with a lot of heat waves that aggravate the condition of the weak and aged people as well as those with ailments that require serious medical attention which joining the warning strike will only create more hardship to their already deteriorating condition," Kalli said.

Responding, the governor commended them for the decision which he emphasized would save lives and help improve the health sector.

"On behalf of His Excellency the Executive Governor of Yobe State Hon. Mai Mala Buni I will like to sincerely thank the National Association of Resident Doctors for agreeing to stand down on the decision of joining the nationwide warning strike embark upon by the national body of the association," the SSG said.
