You Can't Resist A Police Officer - Trump On Rayshard Brooks' Death

You Can't Resist A Police Officer - Trump On Rayshard Brooks

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said that US police have “not been treated fairly”, in a statement that could be construed as backing the white police officer who was charged with the killing of an African American.

A police officer in Atlanta, Garrett Rolfe, was charged with the murder of Rayshard Brooks who fled the scene of an arrest. Garrett could be seen in a video kicking Rayshard as he laid on the ground bleeding out from the shot.

Rayshard's death comes less than three weeks after the murder of George Floyd, another African American who was killed by a white police officer who knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

Speaking on Fox News, Trump said, “I thought it was a terrible situation, but you can’t resist a police officer."

“I hope he gets a fair shake because police have not been treated fairly in our country," he continued.

“But, again, you can’t resist a police officer like that. And they ended up in a very terrible disagreement and look at the way it ended. Very bad. Very bad.”

Talking about the death of Floyd, Trump said he was unable to watch the footage.

He questioned, “Who could watch that?”

Criticising Trump, Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said, “The president’s weak executive order falls sadly and seriously short of what is required to combat the epidemic of racial injustice and police brutality."

In response, Trump said, on Fox News, “They do nothing, and they want to defund, and they want to abolish, they want to abolish police departments.”
