Sumayya Muhammad, a 19-year-old housewife, has requested that her four-month marriage to Umar Imam be annulled by the Shari'a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, under the "Khul" procedure.
Muhammad told the court that she was willing to refund the 100,000 naira her husband had initially paid as her bride price.
Khul' is a type of divorce where the wife releases herself (from the marriage's ties) in exchange for the husband's attention.
Through her attorney I.T Sanusi, Muhammad declared that she was prepared to atone for her transgressions by returning the N100,000 bride price she had received from her husband.
She went on to say that Umar owed her N10,000 and asked the court to help her get it back.
“I am not pregnant and I don’t have a child. I am not interested in the marriage again,” she said.
The defendant expressed his love for his wife and pleaded with the court to grant him some time to try and mend fences with her.
He clarified that he owed N9,500 to his wife, not N10,000 as she had claimed.
Rilwanu Kyaudai, the judge, postponed the case to November 7 so that the couple might attempt to patch things up.
