'Your data is more valuable than your device' — NITDA

In honour of World Backup Day, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has recommended Nigerians prioritise data backup to avert information loss.

Hadiza Umar, the agency's Head of Corporate Affairs and External Relations, delivered this advice on Sunday during a celebration of the day.

Umar defined data backup as moving information from a primary to a secondary location to defend against disasters, accidents, or malicious actions.

“The act of data backup is when you create a copy of your important information, store it in a secure and separate location, and recognise the backup as a restoration method.

“Your data is more valuable than your device. Remember a backup strategy isn’t something to focus on just one day of the year.

“It should be part of your cyber hygiene and by backing up your data, you are already one step ahead of any cyber threat that might cause data loss,” she said.

Umar recommends making three backups of your data, storing one copy offshore or in the cloud, and keeping the other two on different storage devices.

The backup and technology industries throughout the world commemorate World Backup Day each year on March 31.

The day emphasises the need for data protection, as well as system and computer security.
