YouTube Trains Media Practitioners On Election Best Practices

YouTube Trains Media Practitioners On Election Best Practice

In order to provide adequate and accurate coverage of the campaign and elections, YouTube on Wednesday organised a training programme for media organisations and influencers on election best practices.

Solafunmi Sosanya-Lawal, the Head of YouTube for East and West Africa, claimed that the training would help media outlets to use the resources offered by YouTube to spread reliable information.

According to Sosanya-Lawal, the training's purpose was to teach participants how to communicate effectively with a big audience in order to prevent the spread of false information.

She said that YouTube is working to maintain best practices generally while telling their tales as truthfully as they can.

"We know that YouTube has billions of users and we know that the effect of the Nigerian news society is very important and is felt around.

"At the end of the day, we want to ensure that people have the right tools to report the news as truthfully as possible,’’ she said.

She added that this is done to prevent disinformation and to make sure that the media has access to the necessary tools on YouTube to effectively convey their news to viewers.

According to Sosanya-Lawal, the training was designed to maintain accuracy in news reporting, and roughly 30 media outlets instructed participants on the best ways to communicate their stories, particularly during election season.

She pointed out that educating the media will ensure optimal practices and help combat false information and hate speech as much as possible.

Ugochukwu Onwuaso, one of the participants, praised the training and said it was timely to assure authenticity in news reporting, particularly during electioneering.

The training included a variety of topics, including technical sessions, best practices for YouTube videos, and news reporting and election reporting.
