Governor Dauda Lawal Dare

Zamfara State Government has allayed fears that it plans to arm self-help youths from the 14 local governments in the state with guns, saying it will only work within the laws of the Federal republic of Nigeria.

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lawal Dare on public mobilisation and enlightenment, Faruk Ahmed Gusau, Shattiman Rijiya told Allnews on Thursday that there is no need to fear, as government would only do what is right for security of Zamfara residents.

He was speaking on the recruitment and training of 300 youths from the 14 local government of the state

""In each local government, 300 youths were chosen, we have 14 local government councils, making a total of 4200 youths."

"They would be trained for two weeks, starting this week on how to protect themselves, and how to enter the forests."

He said the youths would not be sent to be slaughtered , thus the intensive two week training by experienced security agencies.

On speculations and worry over plans to arm the youths with guns, the SSA said "there are local guns, and if government wants to arm them with guns that are okayed by law, it must be licensed."

Faruku Ahmed Gusau clarified that Zamfara is a state under a democratically run Federal Government of Nigeria, hence would only apply security measures sanctioned by law.

Zamfara is currently grappling with resurgence if banditry on a large scale, as the bandits attack schools, farmers and unsuspecting villagers.

Residents describe daily lives in some of the rural areas as horrific.
