Following a fierce gun duel, the Zamfara Police Command has neutralized a notorious bandit and rescued 11 kidnapped victims.
SP Muhammad Shehu, the command's spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday, July 22, in Gusau, saying that armed bandits blocked the Gusau–Sokoto road at the Dogon Karfe axis and abducted commuters.
"At around 1300hrs yesterday, a large number of armed bandits blocked the Gusau-Sokoto Road at the Dogon Karfe axis, scaring commuters into fleeing for safety. Tactical police officers on patrol along the road were quickly dispatched to the scene "Shehu stated.
"When they arrived, they were heavily engaged in a gun battle with bandits who had already abducted innocent commuters and were about to take them to the forest.
"The operatives bravely repelled them, scaring the hoodlums away from further attacks on commuters.
"During the encounter, one of the bandits was fatally injured, while eleven (11) kidnapped victims were immediately rescued by the operatives."
The command is stepping up various search and rescue efforts in order to safely rescue the remaining victim who was taken to the forest prior to police arrival.
He went on to say that the Commissioner of Police, CP Hussaini Rabiu, has reaffirmed the command's commitment and determination to put an end to the lingering security challenges in the area.
