Zero Discrimination Day: Three Law Empowerment Initiatives In Nigeria

Zero Discrimination Day: Three Law Empowerment Initiatives I

On March 1 of every year, the United Nations celebrates the right of every human to live life to the fullest with dignity, without being held back.

Zero Discriminaton Day marked on this day aims at creating a global movement of solidarity to put an end to every form of discrimination.

The day promotes inclusion, peace, companionship, and equality before the law.

The annually-celebrated day was launched in 2014 by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) to fight the cultural and systemic discrimination against peaople living with HIV/AIDS.

With the 2022 theme for Zero Discrimination Day, “Remove laws that harm, create laws that empower”, UNAIDS expresses the need to replace dicriminatory laws with empowerment laws.

Some laws in different countries stop members from living how they please as a result of their different physical, health, and social makeup, thereby denying them from expressing their fundamental human rights.

In Nigeria, some initiatives have been established with the goal of empowering citizens to live as they please irrespective of their differences.

Below are three law empowerment initiatives in Nigeria:

Justice Empowerment Initiative (JEI)

Justice Empowerment Initiative is a Nigerian non-governmental organisation established to empower the poor and socially excluded individuals and communities, thereby building sustainable community structures to bring about lasting change.

The initiative, founded in 2014 focuses on solving justice and development problems in marginalised communities through technical expertise in law, advocacy, urban planning, creative media and community organisation.

JEI has offices in Lagos and Port Harcourt.
