AC Milan's legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has announced his decision to retire from professional football at 41.

The 41-year-old Swedish star confirmed his retirement after the conclusion of Milan's season, citing ongoing injury concerns as the primary factor behind his choice.

Ibrahimovic, whose contract with Milan is set to expire at the end of June, will not be renewing his association with the club.

The past season has been marred by persistent injuries, leading him to make the difficult decision to bring an end to his illustrious and immensely successful career.

The charismatic forward returned to Milan for his second stint with the club in early 2020, having previously won the Scudetto with them in 2011.

He played a pivotal role in helping Milan secure another Serie A title last season, but his physical struggles prevented him from reaching his full potential this year.

Following Milan's final match of the season, a 3-1 victory over Hellas Verona, Ibrahimovic bid an emotional farewell to the fans at San Siro.

"I say goodbye to football but not to you," he expressed, acknowledging the unwavering support he received throughout his career.

Ibrahimovic began his professional journey at Malmo FF in 1999, subsequently joining Ajax Amsterdam in 2001.

Throughout his remarkable career, he showcased his immense talent while representing some of Europe's most prestigious clubs, including Barcelona, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Milan.

Regarded as Sweden's all-time leading goal scorer, Ibrahimovic notched an impressive tally of 62 goals in 121 international appearances.

Although he retired from the national team after Euro 2016, he made a triumphant comeback in 2021 for their World Cup qualifying campaign, albeit falling short of securing a spot in the tournament.

As Ibrahimovic steps away from the football pitch, he leaves an indelible mark on the sport, celebrated for his exceptional skill, tenacity, and charismatic persona.

The footballing world will undoubtedly remember Zlatan Ibrahimovic as one of the true greats, an icon whose impact extends far beyond his performances on the field.
